State of Mind: A journey into the emotional inner world

Curated by Erica Manetta, this is a joint art exhibition of Zhaoyue Yu, Zhizi Wang, and Rushi (Yuna) Li

Please join us on the opening reception night, at 7:00pm, Gallery 1313 to enjoy the artwork, exhibition's very own wine and DJ Sun's performance!

The mind functions as the center of emotion and mediates the body's responses and behavior to the physical and social environment. State of Mind is an art exhibition that explores the ways emotions affect the perception of ourselves, the others, and the outside world, and how emotions involve different components such as subjective experience, cognitive processes, expression, and psycho-physiological changes.

State of Mind documents these emotional dynamics through the perspective of three artists: Zhaoyue Yu, Zhizi Wang, and Rushi (Yuna) Li. They bring together their different personal experiences on the human feelings, and investigate the terrain between the psychology of the self and the psychology of the others.

The opening reception takes place from 18:00-21:00 on Thursday, August 4, 2016. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Wine and snacks will be provided, please register below.

Swamps & Cicadas: Records and Metaphors features important new work from Chen Minghui and Zou Qionghui. Their art expresses their reflections on the relationship between human society and nature employing the symbolism of swamps and cicadas.

Chen’s Swamp examines the destruction of nature caused by modern society. He preserves his childhood memory of swamps in record-style paintings. Walking through time and space, Chen chooses the simplicity of black and white to express his understanding of nature. His artwork questions whether human beings can interact harmoniously with nature.

Zou’s Zen State interprets life through a cicadas’ life span; in her paintings, cicadas become coded language. They are metaphors for humanity’s spiritual loss in a materialistic society. Can our species escape the emptiness of life? Like cicadas reborn?

Swamps & Cicadas: Records and Metaphors showcases the unique artistic practices of two modern Artists whose work will undoubtedly resonate with viewers inevitably their stimulating thinking. Chen Minghui’s and Zou Qionghui’s perspectives offer new interpretations of the world which challenge traditional values and pictorial conventions of the past.

A World Away - Chinese & Canadian Indie Music Concert

Artwork on the poster: The Casserole by Victo Ngai

We are very pleased to announce our forthcoming event, A World Away: Canadian & Chinese Indie Music Concert, to be held in Toronto’s Daniel Spectrum on April 9, 2016. Co-hosted by Emerging Young Artists and Art Calorie Studio, A World Away will feature more than ten independent musicians in many genres (including Blues, Soul, Rock, Indie Folk, and Pop), and is poised to begin a dialogue between East and West. A World Away is part of the China-Canada 2015-2016 Year of People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Program - independent musicians performing onstage will draw together Chinese and Canadian cultures.

Not only will Chinese and Western instruments be played, but a deeper musical fusion is possible; Chinese, Canadian, and Canadian-Chinese musicians are scheduled to perform in this curated concert, bringing each of their distinct heritages to the stage. Artistic innovation, new musical voices, and a family-friendly space are lined up for this unique concert. A house band, led by Marito Marques, will also lend its talents to the show. If vibrant indie music in springtime is calling you, A World Away is a must-see (and hear). Welcoming to individuals and families, this crossover musical performance has the potential to become an annual Toronto event. We hope to see you at Daniels Spectrum on April 9, to experience A World Away.
